When I saw Nevada Barr's name, I immediately downloaded what turned out to be a short story. I've been a fan of Nevada from The Track of the Cat way back when, so it's a normal purchase to read her, although I wouldn't normally review a short story... This is in memory of Alley... and Not Just Another Review...(on my blog...)But there really wasn't an option for me! When I learned what happened to Alley, I was all for what she had planned...

If readers take it, the way Barr wrote it, they will enjoy it as much as I did.
After all, cats are loved just like family members for many of us...
But if your cat is murdered, would you go to the police??? Even if you had been an eye witness? Well, Alley's Mom knew that Alley had not been the first that Hugh Jacobs had killed!
Thoughts of the death penalty began...
First, find out the name of that killer!
Check him out! He was on Facebook!
Surveillance!
Katie, my neighbor, and I found out where he lived, and his big Hummer was parked there in front...An idea started to form...
Taking walks with Katie soon helped us get in better shape--a plus! Our routine was to walk up to his house and back... While we did that, I was also learning how to hot-wire a Hummer...
The plan really was ingenuous but of course, I'm not going to say anymore...not even about the little one that came to visit at my home after it was all over...
A little bit of humor goes a long way toward making us realize just how quickly some are prone to revenge, to violence...to do unto the other...
It's certainly not what this cat lover would do...
But I reallllllly enjoyed playing with the idea, thanks to Nevada Barr.
She rocks!

I believe I have read all her books and found them very interesting.n would recommend anyone t read them who enjoys a good mystery.
Okay, anyone who has ever loved an animal has thought about this.....THOUGHT! I have read and enjoyed Nevada Barr' s books, so I sprung for this short story. She writes a wonderful crazy character, and brief as it was, I really enjoyed it. Don't know if I could read much more, but this was enjoyable.
I love the style of writing that comes from Nevada Barr. Whatever I think Is coming next in her stories are always above my expectations. She as an awesome story teller.
She saw her best friend murdered and is determined to make the villain pay. The authorities can't be bothered, so it's up to her. But how can a middle-aged lady accomplish that?
This short story will have you marveling at her ingenuity and laughing out loud at her results.
Nevada Barr never disappoints.
I had not read Nevad Barr before and picked up this short story as a freebie for my kindle.
So glad I did. I have found another author I like and will look for more of her work.
This is a well written short story with a few twists and a macabre humor I appreciated though it may not be for everyone.
Nevada Barr outdid herself in this quick read. Titled"Smoke and Murders," she tells the story of a cat she owned and what evil was wrought in her mind as revenge when it was intentionally run over. She left nothing out in striking out a vendetta against the killer.
Her story cracked me up as she developed her plans. I got a very good laugh at the way this short book ended. I am sure anyone reading it will be able to see it for what it is, a parody of some real crimes taking place in this world today.
I gave it five stars because it doesn't get any better than this. Read it. You'll love it too.
This little short story delighted me with it's humor and clever plot. I loved the narrative voice of the main character, a woman plotting murderous vengeance against a serial killer who operates outside the reach of the law. A departure obviously from the wonderful Anna Pigeon novels, but well worth the $.99 and the few minutes it takes to read.
