Julie, a self-centered “Christian” headed for a shopping binge to New York finds herself sitting next to Jesus on the train. Her charmed life is shattered when she gets off in India and realizes that she must rescue 12 “filthy orphans” living in a garbage dump before she can return to her family.
Each day brings overwhelming challenges of living on the street. While squatting in an alley, going to the bathroom, an orphan, Ravi, steals her designer purse. Ravi, who speaks English, holds the key to her communicating with the orphans.
Can she protect the orphans from a predator who steals and maims children and sends them out to beg? How will God provide food when her wallet is stolen? Can she find safe homes for these needy orphans?
As she begrudgingly rescues the orphans the Lord uses them to rescue her from her own cold heart. Watching Jesus slowly change Julie, this self-focused woman, will surely give us all hope for the future.

Pros: 1) Encouraged me so much through the "conversations" with God. That's why it gets 5 stars. I've served as a missionary abroad and still live abroad; though often Julie's complaints seemed whiny and extreme, the responses of God were great (with links to Scripture references). Really helpful to me. Lots of Scripture but used gently in these conversations (with links to the references available). I highlighted various passages (and I almost never do so), and have already gone back to reread portions.2) The story (starting with chapter 5, see below) kept me reading to see what would happen next, though in some ways this may be a story that should be read more slowly, to let the truths percolate through my mind.
Cons: 1) When I went to read the description after seeing this book for free a few days ago, I discovered I had already purchased it almost 3 years ago. I opened it and started reading. Only at the end of the book did I realize that I started reading at chapter 5, not the beginning! So apparently 3 years ago I read the first 4 chapters and quit. When I finished the book I wanted to check something, so went back to the beginning to check it. That's how I discovered I hadn't (this time) read the first 4 chapters. Got a nice little bonus by reading them! However, I must not have liked them so much if I started then quit 3 years ago.
2) I guess it was hard to connect with the rich life of Julie in the first chapters. Maybe that's why I quit at that time?
3) Some things seemed much too simplistic. But take it as more of an interesting fable, which conveys truths about God and ourselves.

This book is one of those books that you know is written by someone who has been in spiritual training for awhile. No cliches. No whitewashing the grit and grime, but acknowledging that God works all things together for good to them that love Him and are called according to His purpose. I have only read a handful of books like this. It takes writing ability and spiritual maturity to be able to pull off a God-plot like this. But. It also takes someone who has had to trust God through enough horrible circumstances to recognize the Truth in this story. I think that the ending was a little rushed. I kind of have my doubts about the speed at which she got approval to take the kids back to the States without a bunch of bribes to officials, having observed firsthand acquaintances trying to do foreign adoptions and bringing family members into the US. Having said that, with God, all things are possible!
Jackie Macgirvin wrote a very riveting page-turner here. Well done. And though it is fiction, the research into the conditions of orphans in India will change you for good ... to not take what you have for granted, to pray for these young ones and those who minister, or may yet minister, to them, and more ... Just remember it's a story, not God's actual words, and don't be looking for dreams and deciding based on them ... Go to the actual words of God, as the main character Julie was instructed to do! That's my only reason for 4 stars and not 5 ... the audible voice/dreams idea presented as some type of norm. The only reliable words from God are written down already in 66 books. Make sure that a subjective or mystical view of God's leading ... doesn't mislead you. Dreams and audible words from God are not what we should seek. The day of meeting will come, and faith will become sight. Just hold on, read, pray, act in love. God WILL work in your life, even though you won't meet on an amazing train ...
In the novel The Designer Bag at the Garbage Dump (2012), Julie, a nominal Christian meets Jesus, and learns to listen to His voice, and obey whatever he commands her to do. It sounds like slavery, but it's meant to show the real impact our deeds have in the lives of people around us. In Julie's case, her two-day trip away from home is turned into a real mission trip to Mumbai, India to learn to trust the Lord in providing her everything she needs. More than that, she gets the chance to care about a group of orphans at a dump, victims of modern slavery, and trafficking by Mr. Shah. Miracles, God speaking directly to humans, and love for the homeless children are practiced.
Adding God directly into a fiction novel is tricky. Remember, everything that's said and done comes out of the mind of the author, despite the many Bible quotes and good intentions. It's one of my struggles with overtly - sometimes cheesy or too heavy loaded - 'Christian fiction'. In my opinion, a more clever composed parable styled after e.g. C.S. Lewis' Narnia chronicles, a non-fictional recount of saving children from trafficking or a real novel without Jesus Christ as the protagonist would have worked better for both believing and non-believing readers.
What a wonderful read! Written along the same vein as The Shack, this book takes the reader on an adventure from the perspective of on-looker to a coming to knowledge story of o rd relationship to God, even if gone unacknowledged forever or for years. A story that clutches at your heart, made me laugh and cry. This story is not "far out" or weirdly written. It's from th perspective of a woman that I think many could relate too...someone caught up in the everyday business of life, the mater ial possessions surrounding us, yet weighing us down, and someone who's struggling to fill a hole only Something greater can..God. This book shows you God's heart for you. This book is a great example of how God often meets us where we're at ( and revealing we rarely know what 'where ' really is, until we are at our end. But beyond that, it shows, through descriptive, gentle detail, how God will use our lows to reveal His glory and love for us, turning our difficult times into times of beautiful growth, revelation, healing and new found identity in Him. This is a book beautifully written, for anyone who enjoys missions and different culture, this will grab your attention. Full of scripture, used in good context, you will be highlighting like mad!
